Exam Dates
The exam dates are subject to change, but they are currently scheduled
for
Exam 1: February 20, and
Exam 2: April 1. Note that this date is different from originally posted.
Please check back here for any changes as the semester goes on.
Final Exam: Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 10:30pm-1:15pm.
There are no make up tests allowed unless you have an extremely serious
and well-documented
excuse. You must see me in advance if at all possible, such as a
religious reason. If this is not
possible due to the nature of the exam conflict, you must provide written
documentation, such as a dated and timed letter from a doctor/hospital
in the case of medical excuse, a death certificate in the case of a
family death, etc. A flat tire or car trouble is NOT a valid excuse.
Oversleeping is not an excuse. Minor medical difficulties such as a
headache or flu that does not require being in the doctor's office is
not an excuse. A court date to dispute a ticket is not an excuse. If
you are not sure if your reason is excusable, and/ or if you can
possibly make it to the exam but it's inconvenient, then it is not an
excuse.
Final Exam
The final exam will cover all the material through Chapter 5.3 in our
text. The format of the exam will be LONGER than Exam 2. It will
include a short multiple choice section, a definition/theorems section
(in which I ask you to state certain definitions or theorems) and a
proof/computation section. More information to come!
Exam 2. Solutions now available!
Exam 2 will cover material from Sections 2.2-3.3 in our text. The exam
will be similar in format to our previous exam, though a little shorter.
Exam 1 Extra Credit
You can earn up to 5 extra credit points on Exam 1 as follows. You must follow
these rules exactly to "unlock" your extra credit. There are a maximum
of 5 points to be earned.
1) Look at your Exam 1, handed back in class. If you didn't come to
class, you can pick up your exam on Monday (do NOT email - it is your
responsibility to be in class). Pick out up to two problems, on which
you lost a total of at least 5
points. (If you don't have two such problems, then your maximum
extra
credit is only the number of points lost on any two problems).
2) Print out the parts of Exam 1 that contain the problems you lost points on.
3) Write up PERFECT and CORRECT solutions to these two problems on the
new sheets you printed. You will be graded with my knowledge that you
have the text and your problem sets as resources. You may not use the
internet. If the text write in incomplete sentences, this does not make
it "right" so be sure your work is up to my standard.
4) You must write up the whole of any problem you choose, not just
parts. If you are redoing a problem that is worth 7 points (and
you got none of them originally) then you must redo all of that
problem, even though you will then be graded on a scale of 5 points.
Write on the top of the front page your NAME and WHICH PROBLEMS YOU ARE
REDOING. I will only grade those you say are the ones you are
resubmitting (maximum 2.
5) Turn in BOTH your exam and also the new write-up to me by Wednesday March 6 in class.
You will be give 0-5 points depending on the quality of your
work. The most points you can earn on a problem is the number you
didn't earn while taking the exam.
6) Late
extra credit is not accepted, so you are encouraged to turn it in
earlier.
