Program Information
Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics
The Department of Mathematical
Sciences offers courses in pure and applied mathematics leading to the
degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics. The PhD program will
train mathematicians for further research, high-level teaching, and
industrial employment. Students will have a solid grounding in
mathematics, be exposed to contemporary problems and applications, use
computational tools where appropriate, and be prepared to collaborate
with others. The PhD
Program in Mathematics is a response to current needs and projected
future needs. The presence of an energetic
mathematics doctoral program has many benefits to other doctoral
programs in technical fields and is of great interest to local industry. All of our graduate Mathematics classes are offered in
the evening (4:30PM or later).
The
PhD program received final approval in March 2005 and we are
currently accepting applications for entry into the program starting in
Fall 2005 semester. General information on the program as proposed can
be found on the links directly below this paragraph. Students
interested in getting more information may contact the Graduate
Coordinator at mathgrad@gmu.edu.

How to apply for the PhD in Mathematics
-
Prerequisites.
The typical
applicant is expected to have a Bachelors degree
in Mathematics from an accredited four-year institution, or
international equivalent. A student who does not meet this
requirement is encouraged to first seek admission to the MS program in
Mathematics (see below for details).
- If your
undergraduate degree is in Mathematics. If your
undergraduate degree is in Mathematics, then you have met the basic
prerequisite to apply to the PhD program. Information on how to
do this can be found by following the link on the left side of this
page. Your application must include the application form, your
undergraduate transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a goals
statement. The GRE is not required at this time.
- If your undergraduate degree is not in
Mathematics. If your undergraduate degree is not in
Mathematics, but you ultimately have an interest in seeking a PhD in
Mathematics, then it is recommended that you seek admission first to
the MS program in Mathematics. Prerequisites for admission to the
MS program are found in the FAQ List. If
you have not met these prerequisites, then you may have to take some
undergraduate courses before applying to the MS program. Once you
have completed your MS degree, or at another appropriate time, you can
apply to the PhD program.
- If you have a
Master's degree in Mathematics or if your undergraduate degree is in
Mathematics and you have taken some graduate courses while still an
undergraduate. In this case, you can apply to the PhD
program as described above. Some of your graduate credits taken
as an undergraduate may be used to reduce the number of credits
required for your PhD in Mathematics. For more information go here.
- If you are currently
working toward an MS degree here at GMU (in Mathematics or another related subject). In this case you will need
to apply to the PhD program as a new student. However, you can
request that your current department send your application folder to
the Graduate Admissions office of CAS. It is not necessary to
request an official GMU transcript.
- If you are currently
working toward a PhD degree related to mathematics at GMU. In
this case you will
need to apply to the PhD program in Mathematics as a new student.
You can request that your current department send your application
folder to the Graduate Admissions office of CAS. It is not
necessary to request an official GMU transcript. It is possible
that the application fee can be waived in this case. Contact the
Graduate Admissions Office of CAS for details.
- Application
deadline. The deadline for completed applications is May
15. Applications recevied after that date will be considered on a
space available basis.
Master of Science in Mathematics
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers courses
in pure and applied mathematics leading to the degree of Master of
Science in Mathematics. The Master of Science in Mathematics addresses
the needs of professionals in the Washington, DC metropolitan area who
are interested in pursuing an advanced degree. Most of our students are
part-time and hold full or part-time jobs, though some are full-time
students. All classes are offered in the evening (4:30pm or later). The
program offers both a standard mathematics program and an emphasis in
computational and applied mathematics.
