ANNOUNCEMENTS:

12/9/2024 I will be having extra office hours on Wednesday December 11th from 3.30-4.30. The cumulative final exam, as stated in the University calendar, starts at 1.30pm on Monday December 16th. It will be in the same rooms as the classes and be 2 hours long. Do not forget to bring a picture ID.

The solutions to Test 3 are here and Test 4 here. Homework solutions for Sections 6.1-3 will appear here over the weekend. Don't look at those until after you have made a proper attempt at the questions.

12/04/2024 Today I finished Sections 6.2 and 6.3. In the last class on Monday we will cover 6.4 and 6.5. I will also have extra hours this Friday from 11.30-12.30. This is an excellent opportunity to collect any tests or homeworks that you haven't already.

12/02/2024 In class today I didn't get quite as far as I thought we would. We covered 6.1 and 6.2 as far as Example 2. By Wednesday please have attempted all the homework questions from Section 6.1. The final homework questions to be collected and graded are Section 6.1 #32 and Section 6.2 #8 (NOT #12 as I stated at the start of the class).

11/19/2024 In class yesterday we covered Sections 5.3 and 5.4. The 4th test on Monday will cover Sections 5.1-5.4.

11/14/2024 Yesterday we finished Section 5.2 and got as far as stating The Diagonalization Theorem. Please attempt the homework questions for Section 5.2 by Monday.

11/11/2024 In class I finished Section 5.1 so please have attempted those homework questions by Wednesday. I also got as far as introducing the characteristic polynomial in Section 5.2.

10/31/2024 In class yesterday I finished Sections 4.4--4.6. In class on Monday I will go through all the homework exercises for 4.3--4.6. The third test on Wednesday will cover Sections 3.3-4.6 inclusive. IMPORTANT: the third homework exercises to be collected on Monday are Section 4.4 #14 and Section 4.6 #8.

10/28/2024 In class today we finished Section 4.3 and just started Section 4.4. I returned the second test and the solutions can be found here.

10/20/2024 In class yesterday I went through the homework solutions for Section 3.3 and finished the material in Sections 4.1 and 4.2. Please have attempted those homework questions by Monday's class.

10/19/2024 I have posted midterm grades based upon just the first test and the first two homeworks in accordance with the stated grading scale. On Monday we will hopefully cover Sections 3.3 and 4.1.

10/10/2024 IMPORTANT: the second test on Wednesday will focus on the material we have covered from Sections 1.8 to 3.2 inclusive. The rules are the same as for the first test, please remember to bring a physical picture ID. Also remember that there is no class on Monday as the University is closed. Enjoy your long weeekend.

10/07/2024 In class today we covered Sections 3.1 and 3.2. Please have attempted the homework questions by Wednesday's class when I will go through them. Remember that the University os closed on October 14th and the second test is on October 16th.

10/03/2024 In class yesterday we finished Sections 2.2 and 2.3. On Monday we will jump to Chapter 3. The second set of graded homeworks will be due on Monday at the START of the class so don't be late. The only questions to be handed in are exercises 35 and 42 from Section 2.2. The rules are the same as for the first graded homewoork questions (see below).

09/30/2024 In class today I went through the first test solutions and the homework questions for Section 1.9. We went through about 2/3 of Section 2.2 and will continue on Wednesday.

09/26/2024 In class yesterday we finished Section 2.1. Please attempt the homework questions from Sections 1.9 and 2.1 by Monday.

09/23/2024 In class today we finished Sections 1.8 and 1.9. Please attempt the homework exercises for Section 1.8 by Wednesday's class. They will not be collected.

09/17/2024 Remember to bring a physical picture ID to the test tomorrow. Also, the math department has just created a set of practice problems with solutions. You may want to try some before the test tomorrow. You can find them at the bottom of the page.

09/11/2024 In class today I covered Sections 1.5 and 1.7. I will go through the homework exercises for these sections and also 1.4 on Monday. The first test is on Wednesday September 18th.

09/09/2024 In class today we went through homework exercises and covered Section 1.4. Please attempt the questions from that section by Wednesday.

09/05/2024 In class yesterday we covered Sections 1.2 and 1.3. I will go through the homework exercises on Monday so please have attempted all of them by then.

IMPORTANT: The first homework questions to be graded will be collected on Monday. The only ones that will be collected are Section 1.2 #4 and Section 1.3 #13. Please note the following:

1) Show all your working and write out the solutions clearly.

2) It must be handwritten (handwritten on a tablet and then printed out is ok). I will collect them at the START of class on Monday. No electronic submissions will be accepted and do not send anything to Blackboard.

3) I will be going through all the homework solutions in class so even if you are just a few minutes late I will not accept it.

4) It must be all your own work. Remember to put your name on it!

09/03/2024 The Math Department is having a Meet and Greet tomorrow Wednesday September 4th from 2-3.30 in Exploratory Hall (2nd floor, open collaboration area). All are welcome. I will be there from 2-2.30 so my office hours will be shortened to 2.30-3 just for tomorrow.

08/28/2024 Please attempt all the homework exercises listed on the syllabus for Section 1.1 before next Wednesday when I will go through the solutions. In class today we got to the bottom of Page 18 in Section 1.2.
