Math Placement Test

 

 

Fall Schedule (September 2014 - December 2014)

 

ALL TEST ARE IN EXPLORATORY HALL, ROOM 4107 (4th floor)

All testing must be completed by the end of the posted testing session.  Students need to arrive with enough time to complete their test in order to begin the exam. Students who arrive late will not be permitted to take the test.

The testing center may be reserved by faculty throughout the semester. Testing will not be available during these times. Please check the website for updates and closures.

Policies:

  • You have 2 chances per section, per year (March 2014 - January 2015) to take the test.
  • You need to bring a photo ID.  The photo can not be faded.
  • Test is given first come, first served basis.  Registration is not required.
  • Testing ends at the posted times.  You must arrive with enough time to complete the test in order to begin.
  • Section Time Limit
    Algebra I 45 minutes
    Algebra II 30 minutes
    Transcendentals 30 minutes
    Basic Algebra 36 minutes
  • Once you start a section you must finish it in the given time period. You do not need to take all sections on the same day.
  • If you fail a section you must wait until the next day at the earliest to retake that section.
  • You may use a 4 function calculator, graphing calculators are not permitted.
  • Scores will be uploaded for registration within 24 hours of you taking the test.
  • By taking the test, you agree to the University Honor Code Policy.
  • Students who wish to retake the test are advised to wait at least one week so that they can sufficiently study the appropriate material.
  • The score on the placement test will be valid for three consecutive semesters, including the summer.
  • The purpose of the Math Placement Test is to determine if you are prepared to take a particular course. You cannot use it to get credit or a waiver for any course.

 

If you receive a 3 or higher on the AP Calculus AB Exam or 4 or higher on the IB HL Exam, you may register for Math 113.  If you receive a 5 or higher on the IB SL Exam, you may register for Math 108.   E-mail Christine Amaya for override at camaya@gmu.edu and include a copy of your AP or IB scores with your name visible.

 

A "Guide to the Placement Test" is available in the Bookstore for a minimal fee.  It contains topics covered and practice problems.  It does not contain a sample test. Please contact Ellen O'Brien (eobrien@gmu.edu) with any requests or correspondence concerning the guide.

The placement test is not required for Math 106 or Stat 250 classes.

Math 110 and 111

Basic-Algebra:
8 or more

Take the Basic Math Program offered through the mathematics learning center. Enroll in Math 110 or 111 upon successful completion.

Math 108,
112, and 125

Algebra I:
13 or more

Take the Algebra Math Program offered through the mathematics learning center. Enroll in Math 108, 112 or 125 upon successful completion.

Math 113

Algebra I:

13 or more

&
Algebra II:
7 or more

&
Transcendentals:
7 or more

Less than 13 on Algebra I:

Take the Algebra Math Program offered through the mathematics learning center. Enroll in Math 105. Then enroll in Math 113 after achieving a grade of C or better in Math 105.

More than 13 in Algebra I, but did not pass Algebra II nor Transcendentals: Take Math 105, then after achieving a grade of C or better, you then would enroll in Math 113.

More than 13 in Algebra I and more than 7 in Algebra II but do not pass Transcendentals: Take Math 104, then after achieving a grade of C or better, you could enroll in Math 113.

Math 123

Algebra I:

13 or more

&
Algebra II:
7 or more

If you did not receive a score of 7 or higher on Algebra II, please contact Catherine Sausville at csausvil@gmu.edu for information about enrolling in Math 123.

Math 105

Algebra I:

13 or more

Take the Algebra Math Program offered through the mathematics learning center. Enroll in Math 105 upon successful completion.

Math 104

(Oftered online only)

Algebra I:

13 or more

&
Algebra II:
7 or more

Less than 13 in Algebra I:

Take the Algebra Math Program offered through the mathematics learning center. Enroll in Math 105. Then enroll in Math 113 after achieving a grade of C or better in Math 105.

Less than 7 in Algebra II:

Take Math 105, then after achieving a grade of C or better, you then would enroll in Math 113.

More than 13 in Algebra I, 7 or more in Algebra II, but did not pass the Transcendentals: Take Math 104, then after achieving a grade of C or better, you then would enroll in Math 113.
