Exam Dates: The
exam dates are as follows. All dates are subject to change, so check
back often and/or come to class to hear about any changes in the dates
below!
Exam 1: September 23, 2011
Exam 2: October 17, 2011
Exam 3: November 7, 2011
Exam 4: December 5, 2011
Textbook: Johnson/Mowry: Mathematics a Practical Odyssey 7e
We will cover most of Chapters 1-5 in the text with supplemental
materials as needed. The book is extremely helpful to understanding the
material, and I will occasionally make additional assignments from the
text. You are strongly encouraged to read the text before coming to
class.
Required Technology: You will need access to the following items for this class:
• Scientific calculator with a button for
. Any graphing or scientific calculator that you already own is
fine. You may not use your cell phone or i-anything as your
calculator.
• Internet Access for online homework @ http://www.webassign.net/
• Internet access the main course website: http://math.gmu.edu/~rgoldin/106
Homework: Homework will be offered and graded online, at www.webassign.net.
You have all been registered by me at webassign.net. Both your user name and your password are your GMU user name.
After you go into your account, you can change your password.
There is a free 14 day trial of WebAssign; you are strongly encouraged
to use this 14 day trial before entering a code and/or buying access to
the course, in case you don’t stay in the course. After the trial
period, you can either use a code from a (new) text to gain access, or
you can buy access to the online homework (and an e-book if you want
that bundled in) through WebAssign. If you buy an access code through
WebAssign it is refundable for the first 14 days. You have the maximum
flexibility if you use the 14 day trial period before buying this code,
allowing yourself a full 28 days to be sure you plan to stay in the
course.
Additional Help:
The Math Tutoring Center, located in Johnson Center, Room 344, offers
help on a walk-in basis. See http://math.gmu.edu for the most
current schedule.
Tests: There are 4 in-class tests for this course. The dates will
be announced on the website as soon as they are decided. Generally I
will not allow makeup tests. You may replace your lowest test grade
with your final exam percentage.
Policy for Make-Up Tests: if
you miss one test for a “justified” reason, you cannot make it up, and
you should use your final exam percentage. If you miss a second test,
also for a “justified” reason, you can show me documentation for BOTH
missed tests, and we can talk about the possibility of a make up. BOTH
missed tests must be for justified reasons before you be allowed to
make ONE test up.
“Justified” Reasons:
o You are in the hospital (need record of hospital visit),;
o You were very sick and/or contagious (need for doctor’s note on letterhead with date);
o jury duty or military serviece (need record and/or proof on letterhead);
o death of someone close in the family (need death certificate or letter from funeral parlor on letterhead);
o religious holiday that requires you not to take exams.
There is absolutely no make up of other in-class activities or homework.
Grading: Grades will be weighted generally as follows:
• Tests : 100 points each, for a total of 400 points
• Online Homework: 250 points
• Final Exam (cumulative): 250 points
• Occasional opportunities to win extra points with
unannounced quizzes and/or projects: 100. Some of these will be “extra
credit”.
Your final grade will be determined in the standard way, i.e. A is
94-100%, A- is 90-93%, B+ is 87-89%, B is 84-86% and B- is 80-83%, C+
is 77-79%, C is 74-76%, C- is 70-73%, D is 60-69%, and F is 59% or
below. All percentages are of the total 1000 points offered in the
course.
Attendence: Attendence is not
required. However, I do not do favors for students who do not come to
class. If you do not come to class, do not come to office hours, do not
send me an email with questions about the material or ask what we
covered, and do not expect me to round a grade up or to spend any time
on your behalf. I have respect for your time (which is why I don’t take
attendence), and I expect the same in return!
Honor Code: It is expected that
each student in this class will conduct himself or herself within the
guidelines of the Honor Code. Among other things, this means that
sharing information of any kind about exams or quizzes (either before
or during the exam) will result at a minimum in a grade of zero for all
parties involved. Violations will also be reported to the
university Honor committee where further consequences such as probation
or expulsion from the university may be incurred. See
http://academicintegrity.gmu.edu/honorcode for a copy of the Honor code.
University Policies: The
University Catalog, http://catalog.gmu.edu, is the central resource for
university policies affecting student, faculty, and staff conduct in
university academic affairs. All members of the university community
are responsible for knowing and following established policies.
Disability Services:
Reasonable accommodations are available for students who have a
documented disability. It is your responsibility to contact
Disability Services at least two weeks in advance of a test if you
require accommodations:
