Announcements
[01/16/11]  Welcome! Our first meeting is on Tuesday Jan 25. The textbook we are going to use is Calculus: Early Transcendentals, by Briggs and Cochran, 2011.
If you have time, please try to familiarize yourself with the material by reading the introduction and prepare for the fruitful work this semester.

We will be using Blackboard website as well as the iClicker technology. We will be making use of online software MyMathLab associated with the textbook. Access to this software is at an additional cost above the textbook cost and so is not required. However, those that do purchase this will have access to online practice homework, quizzes and exams. If you do purchase the software, then once you register it, you can enroll in the course using CourseID: emelianenko37078.

You must have your registered i>clicker with you at all lectures in order to answer the in class questions. You must have come to class at least once and voted on at least one question in order to complete the registration properly. See the online PDF handout on how to register your i>clicker.

[01/27/11] There is no class today due to snow. Please bring your i>clickers to class next Tuesday, Feb 1! First quiz is scheduled for Wed Feb 2.

[02/09/11] Quiz 2 is available online at Blackboard till midnight on Friday Feb 11. Please make sure you can access it and do not procrastinate! I incorrectly stated the date of the 1st Midterm in class - it is going to be held next week, Feb 17, in class.

[02/18/11]  Midterm I will be returned in class on Thursday, Feb 24. Solutions set has been posted online on Blackboard.

Homework and quizzes
Selected handouts and lecture notes will be posted here as the course progresses.
Reading assignments and selected homework problems will follow our main text and will be available on MyMathLab.

Assessment
Your grade in this course will depend on your performance on 3 written in-class midterm exams, weekly quizzes given during recitation sessions and a comprehensive final. Tentative weight of assessment components:
- Midterm I (February 17, in class): 15%
- Midterm II (March 24, in class): 15%
- Midterm III (April 21, in class): 15%
- Final exam (TBA): 25%
- Quizzes: 20%
- Participation and in-class activities: 10%
One lowest quiz and one lowest midterm score will be dropped.

Letter grade will be determined as follows:
Score above 90% 80% 70% 60% otherwise
Letter grade A B C D F

Weekly practice problems will be given that will not count towards the final grade, unless specifically noted. I strongly encourage all participants to do these exercises in order to gain the necessary grasp of the material and perform well on exams and graded assingments. I will discuss solutions in class.
I expect all class participants to abide to the rules and regulations specified in the official GMU Honor code.

About MATLAB
MATLAB is an interactive programming language for general scientific and technical computation with powerful graphics and library functions. We will be using MATLAB environment for some homework problems towards the end of the semester and I expect you to be able to get access to it. Here is some relevant information.
- Some guidelines for accessing and using MATLAB are available here: http://math.gmu.edu/introtomatlab.htm
- A standalone student version of the product is available from Mathworks website for a reasonable price.

Every now and then I find interesting information on the web or in press. I'll be putting this stuff here, since it could help some of you to refresh things you might have forgotten or to aid with the general understanding of the course.
