Algebraic statistics is concerned with the study of
                                                    probabilistic models and their applications to data
                                                    analysis from the point of view of (computational)
                                                    algebraic geometry. The aim of these lectures is to
                                                    offer algebraists an introduction to this subject.
                                                    Special emphasis is placed on models used in biology
                                                    and on the problem of maximum likelihood estimation.
