Bradley, Calculus For Business, Economics, and the Social and Life Sciences (sixth edition) Topics: The course will cover Chapters 1-5 in the text. General Comments: The prerequsite for this course is a passing grade on the Mathematics Placement Exam, a grade of C or better in Math 105, or successful completion of the algebra tutorial program offered by the Math Literacy Center. You will be informed if (according to the registrar) you have not met the prerequisites for the course. If this is the case, then you cannot stay in the course without my explicit permission. You are expected have a thorough knowledge of high school algebra. This material is contained in the first 3 sections of Chapter 1 in the text. I will briefly review the material in Section 3 of Chapter 1 at the beginning of the semester. Some exercises from the first 3 sections of Chapter 1 are given in the Homework Exercises for the purposes of review. The last day to drop this course without receiving an F is Friday, October 2. You will receive your grade on the first exam before that date. This grade should be a strong indicator of how well you will do in the course. Use it to decide whether to stay or drop. If you are undecided about what to do you should talk with me first. The course web page contains announcements and useful information for students in this course. Solutions to quizzes, exams, all handouts, and this syllabus will be made available in downloadable form. You are responsible for checking the web page from time to time so that you will not miss important information. Grading: Homework. Included with this syllabus is a list of homework exercises for the course. You are required to keep a notebook containing your solved homework exercises. This notebook will be collected and graded from time to time during the semester. It is vitally important that you do the homework exercises in a timely fashion in order to perform as well as possible on the exams and quizzes. The assigned problems are representative of the test questions. Your homework grade will count as 1/13 of your final grade. Quizzes. A short quiz will be given in class each Thursday that the class meets. The best 10 of your quiz scores will be counted. Your total quiz grade will count as 2/13 of your final grade. No make-up quizzes will be given under any circumstances. Exams. Exams will be given on Tuesday, September 29, Tuesday, November 3 and Tuesday, December 8. Each exam will count for 2/13 of your final grade. Makeup exams will not be given except in cases of extreme hardship and then only when the student has contacted me in advance. If I am not notified in advance, no makeup exam will be given. Final Exam. There will be a cumulative final exam given on Tuesday, December 15, 1998, 4:30pm--7:15pm in the same room where we have class. The final exam will count for 4/13 of your final grade. The grading scale is as follows. There will be no curve. A: 90 - 100; B: 80 - <90; C: 70 - <80; D: 60 - <70; F: 0 - <60.
