Title: The Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid

Abstract: The classical Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials provide a rich theory to study many different related objects including Schubert varieties, Bruhat orders on Coxeter groups, and Hecke algebras. In this talk we will define a matroid analogue of these classical polynomials which is essentially defined via the characteristic polynomial. There are striking similarities of this polynomial to the classical case algebraically, geometrically, and combinatorially. We will survey some of the recent results and advertise some open problems.
