COLLOQUIUM FEBRUARY 19, 2010

Speaker: Victor Reiner, University of Minnesota

Title: Cyclic actions and generating functions

Abstract: This talk will discuss a phenomenon encountered in recent years all over enumerative combinatorics, where some well-known generating function for a set of objects turns out to encode in a hidden fashion the orbit structure for some cyclic symmetry permuting the objects. An example will be given that is proven via simple linear algebra. This is joint work with D. Stanton and D. White.

Time: Friday, February 19, 2010, 3:30-4:20 p.m.

Place: Science and Technology Building I, Room 242

Refreshments will be served before the talk at 3:00 p.m. in Room 222.
