How to Apply for the PhD in Mathematics

Prerequisites.  The typical applicant  is expected to have a Bachelors degree in Mathematics from an accredited four-year institution, or international equivalent.  A student who does not meet this requirement is encouraged to first seek admission to the MS program in Mathematics (see below for details). You should also check that you took the prerequisite courses for our MS program, which are also required for the PhD program.

If your undergraduate degree is in Mathematics.  If your undergraduate degree is in Mathematics, then you have met the basic prerequisite to apply to the PhD program.  Your application must include the application form, your undergraduate transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a goals statement.  The GRE is not required at this time.

If your undergraduate degree is not in Mathematics.  If your undergraduate degree is not in Mathematics, but you ultimately have an interest in seeking a PhD in Mathematics, then it is recommended that you seek admission first to the MS program in Mathematics.  Prerequisites for admission to the MS program are found in the FAQ List.  If you have not met these prerequisites, then you may have to take some undergraduate courses before applying to the MS program.  Once you have completed your MS degree, or at another appropriate time, you can apply to the PhD program.

If you have a Master's degree in Mathematics or if your undergraduate degree is in Mathematics and you have taken some graduate courses while still an undergraduate.  In this case, you can apply to the PhD program as described above. Some of your graduate credits taken as an undergraduate may be used to reduce the number of credits required for your PhD in Mathematics.

If you are currently working toward an MS degree here at GMU (in Mathematics or another related subject).  In this case you will need to apply to the PhD program as a new student.  However, you can request that your current department send your application folder to the Graduate Admissions office of COS.  It is not necessary to request an official GMU transcript.

If you are currently working toward a PhD degree related to mathematics at GMU.  In this case you will need to apply to the PhD program in Mathematics as a new student.  You can request that your current department send your application folder to the Graduate Admissions office of COS.  It is not necessary to request an official GMU transcript.  It is possible that the application fee can be waived in this case.  Contact the Graduate Admissions Office of COS for details.

Application deadline.  Current application deadlines can be found on Admissions website. Applications received after the deadline are processed in the Mathematics Department on a rolling basis, which means that applications are acted on shortly after they are complete and after the application materials have been forwarded to the department by the COS Graduate Admissions office. Applications received after the deadline often take longer to process, so in order to ensure that your application materials are forwarded in a timely fashion, it is recommended that you submit your application by the above deadlines. International students should confirm the deadline with COS.
