Objective

The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) is a non-profit organization founded in 1971. The purpose of the Association for Women in Mathematics is to encourage women and girls to study and to have active careers in the mathematical sciences, and to promote equal opportunity and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences.

The GMU student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics was founded in 2012 and has undergraduate, graduate student and faculty members. The club is open to members of both genders. We organize and participate in activities to promote studies and careers in mathematics, and disseminate information about various career development opportunities. We hold meeting and invite speakers with careers in mathematics or STEM fields to share their expeiences and advice. We also participate in several outreach activities such as Sonia Kovalesky Day and collaborate with local high school mathematics organizations.

If you want to join the AWM mailing list and participate in our events, please email Maria Emelianenko at memelian AT gmu.edu.

  2. Sonia Kovalevsky Day at GMU
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at George Mason University obtained funds from the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) to host the Sonia Kovalevskaya Mathematics Day (SK GMU Day) on May 20, 2011. The goal of the SK GMU Day is to help motivate the next generation of middle and high-school girls to pursue careers in Mathematical Sciences. The Sonia Kovalevskaya Mathematics Day will be held on May 11th this year. For more information on the details of the event, please click on the following link: [html]

  3. Mentor Network
The goal of the new Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) Mentor Network is to match mentors, both men and women, with girls and women who are interested in mathematics or are pursuing careers in mathematics. The network is intended to link mentors with a variety of groups: recent PhD's, graduate students, undergraduates, high school and grade school students, and teachers. Matching is based on common interests in careers in academics or industry, math education, balance of career and family, or general mathematical interests.
