"Being a woman in mathematics: Do stereotypes really matter?"

Mathematical competence is typically viewed as an ability that is developed and honed independently. For example, students can learn and achieve high in mathematics so long as they study hard, attend classes, and complete the assigned homework. What is often neglected, though, is the social aspect of competence. How a student construes the way he or she is viewed, real or imagined, influences their intellectual competence. This is especially true for females striving to enter into a male dominated domain such as mathematics. This discussion will be framed around the fragility of competence and how it is affected by a web of social relations, particularly as it pertains to women in math.
