Prerequisite:  The prerequisite for this course is a score of 70 or better on the Arithmetic section of the Math Placement Test.

Text:               L. J. Goldstein, D. J. Schneider, and M. J. Siegel, Finite Mathematics & its Applications (9th edition), Chapters 6, 7, some material from Chapter 5.

 

Exams:            There are three midterm exams:

 

Exam 1: February 12 (points 0 - 100)

Exam 2: March 21 (points 0 - 100)

Exam 3: April 11 (points 0 - 100)

 

Final Exam:     May 9, 1:30 - 4:15 pm (points 0 - 100)

 

Final score:     F = 0.2*(Exam 1) + 0.2*(Exam 2) + 0.2*(Exam 3) + 0.4*(Final Exam)

 

Final grade:    A-:       90 - 91;                        A:         92 - 98;           A+:      99 - 100

                        B-:       80 - 81;                        B:         82 - 88;           B+:      89 - 90

                        C-:       70 - 71;                        C:         72 - 78;           C+:      79 - 80

                        D:        60 - 69;

                        F:         0 - 59;

 

Homework:    Homework exercises will be assigned in the end of each class and they are representative of the exam questions. It is absolutely essential to do homework in order to pass this class.

 

In general:      The course is on basics of probability theory and statistics. It teaches theory and trains to do practical exercises. You will learn how to calculate probabilities of events and analyze data. Some fun applications will be considered.
