MATH 108-003 - (Introductory Calculus with Business Applications) - Spring 2011

Announcements:

Notes from Review Session.  Notes from the review session are posted here.

Quiz 14.   Quiz 14 has been graded and been placed in an envelope outside my office door.  You can pick up this quiz, and any other quiz you may not have collected, any time the building is open.

Review Session for the Final Exam.  There will be a review session for the Final Exam on Tuesday, May 10, 3:00pm – 4:30pm in the same room where we have class.  Please come ready with questions about anything that may be on the final.

Final Exam.  The Final Exam for this class will be given on Monday, May 16, 1:30pm – 4:15pm in the same room where we have class.  The following are important things you will need to know about the final:

·         The Final Exam is cumulative.

·         The Final Exam will be approximately twice as long as one of the mid-term exams.

·         The questions on the Final will be similar to questions on the midterm exams and to assigned homework problems.

·         Approximately half of the Final Exam will cover Sections 5.1-5.4.

·         The remainder of the exam will cover the following sections:  1.5, 2.1-2.6, 3.1-3.5, 4.3, and 4.4.

·         Any section not listed above will not be covered on the Final Exam.  However, to the extent that a section not listed contain a concept or skill required in a section that is listed, that unlisted section may appear on the final.

·         NO CALCULATOR IS PERMITTED FOR THE FINAL EXAM.  The questions on the final will be designed so that no calculator will be required.  I will be generous in grading when it comes to arithmetic errors.

·         Remember that there are two versions of every quiz and every midterm exam.  A good review would be to print out the exam version that you did not take, and then work through each of those problems in a simulated exam environment.  You could do a similar thing with the quiz versions that you did not take.

Exam 3.  Your third and last midterm exam will be given on Monday April 25.  It will take the full class period.  Questions on the exam will be similar to homework and quiz questions.  The exam will cover Sections 3.4-3.5, 4.1-4.4.  A calculator will be permitted for this exam.  We will spend part of the class period on Wednesday, April 20 reviewing for the exam.

Note on my office hours.  I have just learned that there is a typo on the HTML version of the syllabus linked from this web page.  It lists my office hours as TR 1:00-2:30pm.  My correct office hours are MW 1:00-2:30pm.  The HTML version of the syllabus has been updated to reflect this correction.

Note on Exam 2.  There was a typo on Problem 4 on one of the versions of the exam.  The function f(t) listed there should have read:  f(t) = (3t^2)/(t^2-t-2) instead of f(t) = (3t^2)/(t^2-t+2).  As a consequence the derivative given in part (b) of the problem is also incorrect, and the graph asked for in part (c) is impossible to draw.  I am very sorry about this.  I have made adjustments for these problems in the grading of the exams of those who took that version.  The solutions (posted below) are for the exam as it should have been written and so will not match the exam you took.  Also the copy of Exam 2 is the corrected version.

Exam 2.  Your second midterm exam will be given on Monday March 28.  It will take the full class period.  Questions on the exam will be similar to homework and quiz questions.  The exam will cover Sections 2.5, 2.6, 3.1-3.3.  A calculator will be permitted for this exam.  We will spend part of the class period on Wednesday reviewing for the exam.

Exam 1.  Your first midterm exam will be given on Monday February 21.  It will take the full class period.  Questions on the exam will be similar to homework and quiz questions.  The exam will cover Sections 1.4-1.6 and 2.1-2.4.  No calculator will be permitted for this exam.  We will spend most of the class period on Wednesday reviewing for the exam.

Uncollected Quizzes.  All quizzes will be returned in class as soon as they are graded.  All uncollected quizzes will be placed in an envelope outside my office door.  You can pick them up at any time.

Pre-semester homework.  It will be assumed that you are familiar with the material in Sections 1.1-1.3 of the textbook.  This material will not be reviewed in class.  You should attempt the assigned exercises in these sections (see here) before the first class meets.  If these exercises are especially difficult or unfamiliar to you you should consider taking the self-paced Algebra Program offered by the Math Learning Center (see here) before taking this class, even if you have passed the Placement Test.  If you have any questions do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

Deadlines. Please be aware of all relevant deadlines.  Details may be found here.
